About
In 2013 I was invited to make work on the small island of Megijima in Japan, during the Setouchi Triennale. Expanding on my ideas around orientation I decided to make 4 flags (in Japanese) for the North, South, East, West points of the island.
This led to a new series of work and in 2017 I made a series of flag works in Scotland, originally intending to make a number of walks/climbs up to 1000m with a 1000 metre flag. Due to poor weather this was restricted to 2 ascents and the remaining time I spent walking around Loch Torridon placing a 0m flag at various locations. Continuing the idea of making work whilst walking, I made further flag works along the River Thames, on the Dorset coast and in Italy. This work is performative, often made in remote places and of an ephemeral nature so the documentation of the work as image is essential. This work also led to making paper map pieces and sculptural work.
I am currently continuing to use ideas around exploration of place and orientation using maps, measurements and observations from walks, archaeological sites and landscape. My most recent consists of two elements which link wall and floor: a clay slip painted ‘map’ and a measuring device, together with a new series of paper map works.
